Using our Data Maturity Assessment to inform data strategy at Clan Childlaw

About the charity

Clan Childlaw is Scotland’s law centre for children and young people. In 2022 they contacted Data Orchard because they wanted to make better use of data to improve their services. The charity had made progress in terms of digital maturity, but data maturity had not kept pace.

Developing a data strategy and roadmap

Clan Childlaw asked all their staff to complete our Data Maturity Assessment. We interviewed a small number of key staff and reviewed their plans for improvement.

We then drafted a data strategy to drive improvement in the charity and developed a road map within the strategy which laid out a series of sensible steps that they could take to drive improvement.

Support to implement the strategy

Clan Childlaw was able to take most of the steps in the road map itself but did ask us to work with them to support a couple of areas.

We developed and delivered a training session for managers and leaders in the organisation, tailored to the specific requirements of the charity as revealed by the data maturity assessment.

One of our Data Analysts worked with Clan Childlaw over a number of weeks finding out what questions different managers and teams had of the data, analysing the data and then sharing their analysis. We shared not only the analysis but also how it had been undertaken to help Clan Childlaw develop these skills in house.

Clan Childlaw has already seen tangible changes in how they use data and the sorts of questions that managers ask of their data. They recognise that this is a journey but they feel they are now committed to that journey.
