Data Orchard Code of Conduct for Events

Our core values are:

  • Honesty: we believe in being truthful and fair. We can be trusted to provide integrity and objectivity. We take responsibility and keep our promises.

  • Quality: we bring together highly qualified, knowledgeable, and experienced people. We apply high standards of professionalism in our methodologies and approach. This ensures our work meets legal and ethical standards and is quality assured.

  • Collaboration: teamwork, trust, cooperation, listening, and communication are key to the way we work with each other, with clients, and with other partners.

  • Respect: we show mutual respect and consideration for one another. We believe everyone has a right to have a voice. We work to ensure diverse backgrounds, ideas and opinions can be heard.

  • Openness: we believe that by being open and transparent we create a culture of trust and shared learning. We challenge ourselves and are open to being challenged by others. We are inquisitive and receptive to discussion, new ideas and ways of doing things.

We try to reflect these in all of our work, including when hosting events.

We want to provide a welcoming experience, in which everybody feels comfortable and able to participate.

We promise to:

  • stand against bullying, discrimination, harassment or intimidation

  • take all reports of non-compliance with our code of conduct seriously, investigate them fully, and respond appropriately

  • take proactive steps to ensure that our speakers include diverse representation where events involve presentations or panels

  • take the time to research inclusive facilitation and engagement methods and collect and respond to feedback, so that we can create a culture where:
    - people feel safe and celebrated for who they are
    - people feel able to express their views and can trust they will be heard
    - people feel able to challenge others views if they do not agree
    - people feel safe to report inappropriate behaviour

We ask you to:

  • listen to others when they are speaking and engage with what they say, asking questions at appropriate times and not interrupting

  • respect the views of others, and challenge their opinions tactfully, critiquing ideas or concepts rather than the person sharing them

  • honour each other’s requests for specific pronouns to be used when speaking to or about one another

  • express your personal beliefs thoughtfully

  • ensure your words and actions respect the right of others to feel safe and respected

  • consider the confidentiality of information shared with you and ask permission if you wish to share it with others

  • invite others to contribute

  • tell us if you are uncomfortable or have any concerns with another person’s behaviour

  • keep any physical contact safe and socially appropriate (at in-person events)

Our complaints procedure:

If you have a complaint about someone’s conduct during an event, please speak to a Data Orchard staff member (in person, or via direct message if attending a virtual event) or contact us.

Every complaint will be reviewed by at least two people. These people will gather evidence about the incident and decide if the code of conduct has been broken.

If the code of conduct has been broken, action will be taken at the discretion of those reviewing the complaint. This could include warning the person in question, asking them to leave the event, banning them from future events, or reporting the incident to the person’s employer.
