Happy Pi Day

Hannah Khwaja, Data Analyst

It’s that time of year again! Pi Day – a celebration of the mathematical symbol Pi (represented by the Greek letter “π”) – takes place every year on the 14th of March. This is because in US notation the date is 3/14 and the value of Pi is approximately 3.14… (I won’t go any further but Pi has been calculated to over 50 trillion digits beyond its decimal point!).

Pi Day is an opportunity to celebrate maths. As data folk, we like to do that as we work a lot with numbers. But it’s also widely used an excuse to eat pie. We were more than happy to do that too.

Spiced Veg and Feta Pi

Mads baked a delicious-looking Pi-adorned pie stuffed with spiced caramelised onions, garlic, grated carrot and feta. Although she said she struggled to fit her rectangular pastry sheet into a circular pie dish we were impressed with her solid pastry Pi symbol.

Cheesy Veg and Mustard Pi

Libby made a delightfully crispy-looking cheesy vegetable pie flavoured with mustard, neatly embossed with Pi. Perhaps controversial amongst pie folks but I appreciate some singed bits on a savoury pie.

Harissa Squash and Feta Pi

I baked a harissa-roasted butternut squash and feta pie (the vegetables and cheese combination was a popular theme this year). I had planned to adorn it with a pastry Pi but having no pastry left over, some extra feta saved the day.

Fortuitous Pi

Sian has been working in London for the last couple of days and as such did not have time to bake her own pie. After taking a selfie at the Cornish Pasties booth at Kings Cross Station late yesterday evening and feeling like a bit of a Pi fraud, she arrived at her friend’s house for dinner and what awaited her but a home-made homity pie.

Do let us know if you too celebrated Pi Day. We’d love to see a picture of your pies. And to get you ready for next year’s event, here are some terrible Pi Day jokes and puns to memorise and inflict on your loved ones.
